Starting Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for your child can be both exciting and overwhelming. As a parent, you may have many questions about what the first few sessions will look like and how your child will adjust. This guide will help you understand what to expect in the initial stages of ABA therapy.

Before therapy officially begins, we will conduct an initial assessment. This is a crucial step in developing an individualized treatment plan. During this assessment, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will:

  • Observe your child’s behavior in different settings
  • Identify strengths and areas for improvement
  • Assess communication, social, and daily living skills
  • Discuss goals and priorities with you as the parent
This session is typically play-based to help your child feel comfortable and engaged.

Once therapy begins, your child will meet our ABA technicians, who will work closely with them during sessions. Technicians will focus on building rapport with your child by engaging in preferred activities and following their lead. The goal is to create a positive, trusting relationship so that learning can occur more effectively. ABA sessions are structured but flexible, designed to keep your child motivated while targeting specific skills. In the early sessions, you can expect:
  • Short, engaging activities tailored to your child’s interests
  • Reinforcement strategies to encourage positive behavior
  • Play-based learning to build skills naturally
  • Data collection to track progress
Sessions will take place in our clinic, with an in home or school setting when necessary, depending on your child’s needs. As parents or caregivers, you will play a key role in ABA therapy. Your BCBA will invite you to observe sessions, provide input, and participate in training. You’ll also receive guidance on strategies to use at home to reinforce the skills your child is learning.

Every child responds differently to ABA therapy. The first few sessions are about learning what works best for your child and adjusting strategies accordingly. The BCBA will continuously monitor progress and update goals to ensure your child is making meaningful gains.

Starting ABA therapy is a significant step in your child’s developmental journey. While the first few sessions may feel new and unfamiliar, your therapy team is there to support both you and your child. By staying engaged and working collaboratively with your child’s therapists, you can help create a successful and positive experience.

If you have any questions about beginning ABA therapy, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Your child’s progress and well-being are the top priority, and a strong start sets the foundation for future success!
